What is the burning or smoldering point of dry wood?

need to heat treat some metal in the oven on wooden blocks for 2 hrs. @ 400 deg. but do not want the blocks to burn or smolder.

well, paper burns at 451 which is made from wood, so I figure you would be safe

As far as the answer below....that would work, but you have to remember you will produce steam as the water heats up.  Would the steam do damage to your metal?
