I just finished the first season, and I have been wondering that forever. Is it to hold valuable books? Demons?

  1. the cage is the in the library for valuable rare books that was its original purposes lots of public library's have them to look books away at night to prevent theft

it was there when giles first arrived so wasn't made for his purpose

it was used in the series to hold oz on the full moon lock up the dangerous books and hold buffy weapons but this was not its original purpose

i am guessing the library had rare books before giles arrived and these were not relevant to the show

  2. the cage is for valuable stuff (like old books and weapons) and  Oz when he is a werewolf

  3. I believe that it originally is for storage.  You occasionally see a character needing something in there, which makes sense because given the high school environment you really wouldn't want to let just any student go in there and grab an axe or what not.  The addition of Oz (Seth Green) to the cast gives it another use but I don't want to spoil it.

  4. Your first guess was right. It was to hold the more valuable books and weapons (especially the ones with spells and demonology in them) so the schoolkids couldn't accidentaly get ahold of them and use them for very bad things. But they have used it to hold some demons, vampires, and werewolves as the series progressed.

  5. The cage in the Sunnydale library is used to hold valuable books and weapons for Buffy to train with. Later in season 3, we learn that the cage is also there to hold Oz, Willow's boyfriend. He is a werewolf, so that's the only thing they could find in order to keep him from killing people.
