Just as promised...Runner A on First and Runner B on second with 1 out. Runner B steals third on first pitch. On the second pitch Batter hits a deep fly ball to center field. The ball is caught. Runners A and B tag up properly and attempt to advance. Runner B is safe at the plate. Runner A is tagged out at second for the second out. On appeal by the defensive team it is determined that the Batter batted out of order. What is the ruling?

Let's assume we are playing by official baseball rules (OBR) because the ruling is different in some rule sets. (FED in particular)

  1. This time NY33 beat me to it. He's correct and has the correct rule quoted.

The batter who should have been batting is declared out. The steal of 3rd base is valid but advancing on the hit is not, so runner A returns to first base and runner B returns to 3rd base. The inning continues with 2 outs (1 before this situation, then the batter being declared out). The batter is the player who is next in the order after the player who missed his at-bat. For example if the #2 hitter was the one who should have been hitting and was called out, then the next batter is the #3 hitter.

  2. Player supposed to be at bat called out, runners on 1st and 3rd returned to their bases

  3. I'm confused about something.  You said "Runner A on First and Runner B on second with 1 out. Runner B steals third on first pitch. On the second pitch Batter hits a deep fly ball to center field. The ball is caught. Runners A and B tag up properly and attempt to advance. Runner B is safe at the plate. Runner A is tagged out at second for the second out."

So if there's one out on the pitch, the ball is caught for the 2nd out, then wouldn't Runner A getting tagged out be the third out?

  4. Runner B keeps 3rd base, A goes back to first, batter is out.  The out is credited to the guy that should have been up, and the next batter after him is then up

    "6.07 BATTING OUT OF TURN.

    (a) A batter shall be called out, on appeal, when he fails to bat in his proper turn, and another batter completes a time at bat in his place.

    (1) The proper batter may take his place in the batter’s box at any time before the improper batter becomes a runner or is put out, and any balls and strikes shall be counted in the proper batter’s time at bat.

    (b) When an improper batter becomes a runner or is put out, and the defensive team appeals to the umpire before the first pitch to the next batter of either team, or before any play or attempted play, the umpire shall (1) declare the proper batter out; and (2) nullify any advance or score made because of a ball batted by the improper batter or because of the improper batter’s advance to first base on a hit, an error, a base on balls, a hit batter or otherwise.

NOTE: If a runner advances, while the improper batter is at bat, on a stolen base, balk, wild pitch or passed ball, such advance is legal."
