My dog was hit by a car and suffered some slight damage to the cauda equina. He can lift his tail, but only half way (he is a Norwegian Elk hound and his tail usu remains curled on his back).. I understand these kinds of injuries can take months to heal. Nerves in humans grow about 1 mm a month (according to my physician) what is their rate of growth in canines? Also... what sort of foods or alternative medicine methods can be utilized to stimulate neuron axon growth? THANKS FOR AN INTELLIGENT REPLY!

  1. Try doggie accupuncture and /or water therapy.

  2. Find a Vet that does homeopathic and acupuncture my Vet does this here where I live

  3. suggests nurtrophin by standard processing..we use it at work in such cases

  4. Acupuncture can help in cases like like these.  Good quality meat based foods that are high in fatty acids will sometimes help.  Make sure that your dog doesn't get overweight.  Cauda equina can take a long time to heal if it ever does.  Sometimes arthritis will build up in the area which delays healing big time.  A rule of thumb on nerve injuries in dogs is, as long as improvement is seen weekly the healing is progressing.  If no progress is made in three weeks, then most likely will not be anymore improvement.  Nerve healing and regeneration is also about 1mm/month in dogs.

  5. Every dog is an individual and heals at its own rate. I'm not aware of any published information that states the nerve regeneration rate in canines. It may depend on the severity of damage. You may want to contact a holistic vet for supplement information. I would ask about accupuncture treatment for nerve regeneration studies.
