  1. haarlem is the capital of north holland

  2. Amsterdam. I am thinking the Hague is an area, not a town.

  3. Travel to Amsterdam to explore Holland's most famous city and one of Europe's centres of history and culture, by taking Stena Line's ferry via the Hook of Holland to Amsterdam.

Amsterdam's beautiful flat landscape means that it is a paradise for cyclists. Why not hire a bicycle for a fun and exciting way to explore Amsterdam's stunning architecture. Take time out to wind your way around Amsterdam's 165 canals and appreciate the serenity of its vivid public gardens and bustling flower markets. You could enjoy all this and more when you travel to Amsterdam with Stena Line.

The Hague is home to a variety of international organisations that visitors to the city will be keen to explore. The Peace Palace was a gift from the philanthropist, Andrew Carnegie, and today exists as a symbol for international peace, as well as housing the International Court of Justice. Travellers in The Hague will certainly enjoy the city's greener areas, such as the walled palace garden behind Noordeinde Palace. And why not explore The Hague by bicycle or boat for a unique way to appreciate this green city?

  4. The country The Netherlands is comprised of 12 provinces. Two of these provinces, North Holland and South Holland, form the region Holland, although this is a historical region, not an official one.

The capital of the province North Holland is Haarlem and the capital of the province South Holland is The Hague (Den Haag in Dutch, third largest city in the country after Amsterdam and Rotterdam).

As Bla Bla has said; The Hague is the seat of the National government as well as the seat of the Provincial government but Amsterdam is the official national capital and Amsterdam is located in the province of North Holland.

Rotterdam is in South Holland and since the three largest cities in the country are all in the region Holland it's easy to understand why many people still call The Netherlands Holland. Mostly this is because of history though. The Netherlands used to be "The Republic of United States of the Netherlands" and back then Holland was simply the most important and the most wealthy of these United States of the Netherlands. Now the official name is Kingdom of the Netherlands, The Netherlands for short and Holland for very short.

  5. Ok - simple explanation from someone who lives here!

Holland is actually the name for two of the (12) provinces in the Netherlands http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Netherlands...

    - "Noord Holland" (in English, "North Holland" where Amsterdam is located within)

    - "Zuid Holland" ("South Holland" where Den Haag/The Hague is located within)

The capital of the Netherlands is Amsterdam http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amsterdam.  Den Haag http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hague is where the government resides.

This is unusual as normally the government is located in the same city as the capital in most countries, but Amsterdam is the capital

    Hope this explains simply

  6. Amsterdam is the capital of Holland and The Hague is where Parliament is located and it is also where they have International court.
