(Carpetbagger referred to Northern opportunist who took advantage of displaced Southerners after the war between the states...named so for their propensity to carry tote bags, if you will, made of carpet like material)...

Carpetbagger was the name given to people from the north that came to the south after the Civil War to make money.  The suit cases they carried we made from rugs.  So they got nicknamed Carpet baggers.  Sorry I don't know the answer to the other one.

Im not giving a lot of details but a carpetbagger is a person who moves around a lot and carries a single bag (years ago people would make bags out of carpet remants and they were called carpetbags ). One hundred years ago they would rode the trains.

A scalawag is a person who is constantly getting into minor trouble.
