  1. there is not just one cause. many educated, older single women make decisions to have children, realizing their time for fertility is almost up. L*****n couples with children are often counted as single as many do not recognize the couple. also premarital s*x is more accepted, so are the 'side effects'.

  2. "During the 1990–2000 decade, pregnancy rates declined about 8 percent for married women and 12 percent for unmarried women. The birth rate for married women declined about 6 percent, while the abortion rate fell one-fourth. The birth rate for unmarried women changed little, but the abortion rate for unmarried women also declined about one-fourth."

That's from the Centers for Disease Control published in 2004. In the data the birthrate for unmarried women was 89.6 live births per 1000. In 200 it was 89.6 per 1000 and in 1990 it was 102.7 per 1000. It can be argued that the birthrate among single women is falling.

A search of the news finds a number of article about successful single women raising families. These articles leave the impress ion that this is a recent trend.

  7. Short-term relationships...

  8. laziness, no self respect, and expensive birth control.

    Single Moms

    10 million

The number of single mothers [PDF] living with children under 18 years old, up from 3 million in 1970.

  10. The acceptance by society for young men and women "living together." Women are more able to support a child outside of marriage, and men are expected to contribute whether married or not. In the 50's and 60s when I grew up, children born "out of wedlock" or "illegitimately" were looked down on along with their mothers. This changed in the 60's and 70's; the term "single mother" became respectable.
