  1. Young Cosette is an orphan, somewhere around 8-10 years old.  She was sent by her destitute mother to live with a couple who were supposed to be foster parents, sort of, but ended up abusing her.  This couple used her as a child servant, and even offered her as a sexual service to the guests at their inn on occasion.

Fantine, the girls mother, ends up dying before she can afford to take Cosette back into her life, and so Jean Valjean (the hero of the play) promises to get her back.  He finds Cosette, and essentially buys her from the family "taking care" of her.  That is how little they care about her - they are willing to sell her for a good price.

Young Cosette is a dreamy child, who uses fantasy about her real mother to escape from the horrors of the world she has been forced into.  However, she ends up growing up under the caring eye of Jean Valjean, and becomes a lovely and educated young lady.

Could you elaborate on what you are confused about?
