  1. She is very protective of her sister Nessarose. When she gets angry she is able to control nature. She is intelligent and very interested in learning. She wants to help others and improve Oz. (Saving the lion cub and fighting for the Animals). She is independent, outspoken and green.

  2. She is fierce, protective of what's important to her, and willing to speak whatever's on her mind. She has a very strong side of her personality, but can also be very vulnerable. Elphaba is self-conscious about her appearance and desperately wants to be accepted by society, but most important, her family. Though only trying to help, she often feels as if she has failed her friends and family, eventually leading to her transformation into the Wicked Witch of the West. Elphaba is very intelligent, but struggles for acceptance throughout the entire story.

  3. She is passionate first and foremost. Her passion often causes her to be an outcast.

She is devoted. Devoted to helping those who cannot help themselves. Devoted to helping her crippled sister Nessa.

She is lonely. Though she wouldn't admit it publicly, she feels very alone. For such a long time her only company is Nessa, who can't realize the pain Elphaba feels. And when Nessa is killed, Elphaba's only remaining refuge is Fiyero. When he sacrifices himself for her, she can't entirely bear her loneliness. This feeds her anger.

She is angry. She sees injustice and must stop it. This anger is a natural reaction. Some things we should get angry about. Elphaba is also angry because of her perception of herself. She can't see her own beauty, and it upsets her.

She is misunderstood. Portrayed as evil, treated as evil. But really good. Who can blame her for the way she acts in "The Wizard of Oz"? Her sister was just killed. She's been portrayed as evil for speaking out. Her lover has just died (to her knowledge).

This is all from the musical. The book is actually much deeper than the musical. It really makes you think. That said, I like the musical much better.

  4. She's the Wicked Witch of the West at the time Dorothy lands in Oz.

  5. Elphaba was abused as a child and forced to care for her crippled younger sister, so she learned to fight adversity with sarcasm and keep everyone out. She is smart, independent, and very outspoken, which causes her to get into trouble sometimes and accounts for some of the misunderstanding people have about her. Due to her skin, she is much more a target for ridicule and rumors than Glinda or Fiyero. She has a desire to be loved and accepted. On that note, she was devoted to many things: her sister, helping the Animals and very passionate in her fight against the Wizard. Also, the path that led her to become the Wicked Witch of the West was very psychological. She presumed her lover was dead, after he had saved her, and out of spite became a Witch. She finds it hard to forgive, but eventually succeeds in reconciling her friendship with Glinda. Elphaba is misunderstood, smart, fiery, passionate, out-spoken, and many other things.
