  1. Onkyo is not the only game in town but they do offer a good unit at a reasonable price.

I would start by searching amazon.com and then broaden my search to some of the AV internet stores. That will give you an idea of what is available and for what prices.

You may want to go to a few local stores and check out the equipment before you buy on the internet but your best prices will be on line.

  2. For budget 7.1 receiver, the beat value out there is:

    Onkyo TX-SR605

    Specs/Features:

    90 watts x 7 into 8 ohms

    Dual HDMI 1.3a inputs with 1080p pass-through

Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio Decoding

Audyssey 2EQ auto calibration and room EQ

    Sirius and XM Ready

    iPod compatible (with optional dock)

    Multi-source/multi-zone capability

    If you want cheaper:

    Onkyo TX-SR575

    $400

Check out Home Theater magazine 's top pick AV receivers:

  3. You can get a silver TX-SR605 for $264 refurbished by Onkyo through uBid, an authorized Onkyo refurbished seller.

Unlike most other CE's who give 90 days on B-stock/refurbs, Onkyo gives a 1-year warranty, you can't beat it.

The 605 model is the lowest I'd go as the models underneath it do not accept audio across HDMI. Hardly worth it with all the HDMI-capable equipment on the market these days.

  4. Skepticb made some good suggestions on Onkyo units.

I would suggest looking on amazon.com, as the Onkyo model 575 is available there for a mere $231.96, with free US shipping. Its list price is $400, so thats a nifty savings of 42%.

The Onkyo 605 doesn't seem to be available at this time from them, though. There is the 606 for $399, list price $500. Also, the Onkyo 705 model, in black, can be had for $513.23, free US shipping, list price of $799.

Have a look over there, and read the detailed product descriptions and owner's reviews, and see what model with what features best suits your set up needs.
