What is the cheapest airline to fly on?

I would like to get from WI to California to see my brother and the only way i can go is if i can get a cheap flight...please help me.. under 500$ please

It really depends on the exact airports being used, the dates you'll be gone, etc.  I use http://quicksearch.shermanstravel.com/ to get a feel for what prices are on the aggregate sites, then I go to the airline's website to book my tickets.  Hint: sometimes the prices are actually lower on the actual airline website, but sites like travelocity and such usually can give you a good feel for which ones to try.

The two biggest things that can affect prices are travel dates (flying on a weekend day is more expensive) and whether the airline you're using has its hub at one of the cities on your itinerary.  For example, flying out of Milwaukee, Midwest can be cheaper because Milwaukee is the hub so they have more flights going more places.  Flying from Milwaukee to Houston (IAH) was cheapest on Continental (when I went last year) because Houston is Continental's hub.

I would check to see the travel websites to see how much they charge and also go the airline websites as well.  Sometimes the airlines have promotions the travel websites do not have.  You can also check out http://www.airfarewatchdog.com.

Look to see what alternate airports you can fly into.  For example instead of flying to LAX, you see how much it costs to fly into Long Beach or Burbank or Orange County.

all airlines can be different prices depending on when you want to fly.

if you go to sidestep.com you will find really good deals. what the site does is search every airline over the web to find you the cheapest deals.
