What is the cheapest and easiest way to get from Barcelona to Rome?

I'm planning on going to Spain in December and I'd like to go to Rome for a few days as well. I've checked some of the low-cost airlines and it doesn't seem like any fly directly from Barcelona to Rome (Or from Madrid either). Anyone have any ideas? I'm very flexible since I'm in the early stages of planning this.

  1. Have you checked Ryan Air (They have flights from Rome to Barcelona). I just did a search on ryanair and they show flights for April as little as 1.99 Euro one way + tax.  Look into Easy Jet and Euro air I think it is? Or even tried Alitalia or Iberia Air? Also, look into trains as well. They usually run you pretty cheap, but it would be a long haul for train, blah!  Look at cheap flights close to that city, and then there, which they should though the rest of the way? Maybe a city near Barcelona, like Carcossane, France and you can take a train which could take you about 1-2hrs from there.

  2. A train will likely take longer than 6 hours, but do it overnight -- you'll save time and hotel/hostel costs. You can always pay for a bed, but it can be fun to get a seat without a bed. You'll probably make some friends. People often share food and drink. It can be a great experience.

  3. Remember that time is money. Check air travel.

The train maybe is cheaper but I'm sure that the travel from Barcelona to Rome can take at least 6 hours. Last year I travel from Barcelona to Valencia in a medium rapid train in 2 1/2 hours.
