  1. well seeing as how you didn't list a car I'll give some overall things. changing spark plugs can help so can changing air filters. New spark plug wires can help too.  Higher octane gas hi flow fuel pump can all help. Synthetic oil and new oil filter. can all help if your car is old and losing hp you may need a restorer because your losing compression.  there are a mulitude of things you can do really

  2. To increase Hp you have to spend money It cant be cheap,

    You can install

    a) Big Air filters

    b) Turbo Charger

    c) High Performance Exaust Kit

    d) NOS

    e) MSD (multiple spark discharge)

    f) High Performance Spark Plug

    g) Gear Box

These all together deliver unbeliveable POWER PICK UP SPEED ACC.

  3. Cheaper and easier still than nitrous (which arguably will give lots more HP - but at the risk of engine damage) is the air filter - a K&N air filter will allow the engine to breathe better - then adding dual exhausts with a decent hi-flow muffler.

The combination air filter and exhaust mods will get you 20+ HP for starters.

  4. Nitrous does not give the most bang for the buck, considering the price of rebuilding a blown stock engine with forged internals capable of handling nitrous. And, that doesn't include the price of refilling the tank when you run out.

The best means of horsepower really depends on the car. Some cars have restrictive intake designs, so a new setup on that end would provide good power. Others have low-flowing exhaust, so replacing that would help. And also keep in mind, if you are looking for 'cheap', you may not get the reliability that you might need.

  5. Nitrous Oxide gives the most bang for the buck.

I saw on a previous post that you are modifying a 1993 Mazda MX3

Before making any modifications to gain serious horse power, make sure your engine and drive train are in good condition or they don't last long.

Also, when using any serious power adder like nitrous or a turbo, you need to use a little common sense.  If you run full throttle for any extended amount of time, something is going to break.  If you need to run this hard, maybe you should consider selling your little 4 banger and get something with a V8.

Also with nitrous, you have control on how much power you want to add.  You control this by simply changing the jets in your nitrous system.  If you use some common sense and don't go too far, you will not damage your motor.

Personally, I would not go over 100 additional horse power using any modifications without making further modifications to the internal components of your engine.  To go over 100 additional horse power you should install forged pistons, connecting rods, and crank shaft.

With a dry nitrous kit you could get an additional 50 - 80 HP. These kits will cost you between $400 - $500.  They can be installed in your driveway in an afternoon by someone with moderate mechanical skills.

For a little more, you could install a wet nitrous kit.  These will get you an additional 100 - 150 HP.  You could go even more, but you would risk breaking parts.  These kits will cost between $450 - $600.  These take a little more time to install than a dry kit because of the additional plumbing for the additional fuel lines.  But can easily be done in a weekend.

Some might say cold air kit.  Theses are just eye candy with very little noticable performance gains.

    The bang for the buck

    Cold Air Intake

Cost = $200 Average.  Horsepower gained = 10 HP, and I'm being generous.  About $20 per horsepower gained

    Nitrous Oxide

Cost = $500 Average.  Horsepower gained = 100 HP Average.  About $5 per horsepower gained
