What is the cheapest/best way to travel from Faro in Portugal to Rome in Italy without flying?

...It's a long, long way, the cheapest is flying without a doubt.

Second best would be a bus from Faro to Sevilla and from there the train to Madrid. In Madrid you can catch fast trains, Eurostar type that go almost directly to many cities in Europe, Rome included.
