What is the cheapest building I could make to live in that can pass codes?

I dont have much cash just about $30,000.00 and getting ready to retire in about 8 years, don't want any thing fancy maybe just a studio on my desert property.

  1. $30,000 could make a pretty nice structure if you don't need it huge.  Modular units would work, too , unless you have deed restrictions that say everything must be "stick-built".  Find an underemployed framer or plumber and i bet they can build you something special.  Get permits.


  2. Of course a "mobile home" is one possibility.  You might also try a web search for "manufactured," pre-fab," "modular" or "factory-built" homes.  Many of those are quite reasonably priced and very aesthetically appealing for the price.  Be sure to check your codes first, though.  That's the only way you'll know what will pass them.

  4. Look for "Katrina Cottage" ... it's a kit you can order from Lowes. But be sure to check your local building codes.

    There are several places that build "micro houses" ... or just buy a small manufactured home.
