  1. The cheapest airports tend to be the major hubs.  Based on size, these are the top 5

    1.  London Heathrow Airport London

    2.  Charles de Gaulle International Airport Paris

    3.  Frankfurt International Airport Frankfurt

    4.  Madrid Barajas International Airport Madrid

    5.  Amsterdam Schiphol Airport Amsterdam

For international flights I have read that Amsterdam, Frankfurt & Heathrow are the cheapest due to the volume of different carriers.  Then there are many low-cost (budget airlines like Ryanair, Easyjet, BMI Baby etc) which offer cheap flights between airports within Europe

Timing wise - well it used to be that there were many offers outside of the peak season (May-Sept), but nowadays carries simply reduce the number of flights, so the savings are not as big these days.

The best way to get a cheaper flight is to book as far in advance as possible

  2. London is usually the cheapest, but there are also many cheap flights into Paris and Amsterdam.

Flights to any major European city are usually the cheapest in January and February, and most expensive Christmas, July, or August.

  3. London Heathrow, from there you can jump on any low cost carrier or even take the train to somewhere else in Europe for a fraction of the price.
