I would suggest that your best bet is to search for kayaks on Craigslist and ebay and  then learn more about them by researching the kayaks you find on paddling.net to see if it's right for you.

Under craigslist you'll have to narrow your search down further to an area in Michigan before you search under boats for kayaks.

On ebay you can just search for kayaks, but once again you probably want to narrow down your search area.  Most sellers don't want to ship kayaks, but I have seen a lot of nice kayaks for sale in Michigan that I have to pass up, because I'm not going to drive from New York to pick them up.

The final site at paddling.net is a great place to read reviews of anything you find.  You can also use their classified section to search for kayaks, but I've found that what's offered there is normally on the high end for quality, and therefore very expensive.
