Now!! Or basically any time up until October-ish, as long as you check when school holidays are and avoid them. They've just finished and the next lot are mid September, so I'd say visit before then!!

If you're coming from overseas, this is a very bad year to be visiting as the Australian dollar is incredibly high against the USD right now.

If you're using Euros, then its less of an issue.

Our Winter, June, July August.  Still it is not very cold at this time, if you are a surfer, wear a wetsuit, if you plan to walk around, jeans and a long sleeved top, maybe a hat and you will be fine, it is great to holiday at this time as nobody else really does, cheap holiday, not too many tourists, cool crisp mornings on a clean uncluttered beach.
