  1. In general, I've always heard its more expensive to fly out or to come home on a weekend, Friday through Sunday, so flying the weekdays - Monday through Thursday - is cheaper.

In addition, 'red eye' flights (which means depart or arrive between 2am and 6am) are less popular, so if an airline offers a red eye flight it will probably be cheaper than flights that leave during 'normal' times of the day.

Also, another general rule is to buy your tickets ahead of time, because as the seats on the plane fill and 'supply' of seats is low, but people want these seats (that is, 'demand' is high) then the price will be higher.  This is basic economics principles.  So buying tickets ahead of time means chances are the supply is high (they have alot of seats) and demand is low (everyone isnt buying and filling the seats in large quantities).  Plus, with gas prices (here in the US at least, but I'm sure the world is impacted), you never konw when the price of gas will raise again in the future and thus they charge you more because it will take them more money to fill the airplane.

As for an 'off season' - that is true there is such a thing as the off season, but the off season varies depend on your location (I'm assuming the person who answered that March is the off season was speaking of the off-season for the UK, but who knows).  Of course there might be drawbacks to going to the UK during the off-season.  Its the off-season because fewer people want to go there...so  you could have problems with, for example, the weather.

The best idea is to take these 'general tips' to heart, and then get on the net, or get with a travel agent, to start looking for your flights.  The travel agent will be paid to find the cheapest ticket for you, but remember there is always an agent fee.  On the other hand, you could search yourself and check the prices every day.  You could even send an email to family and friends explaining that you want to take a trip, and if they have any time and can look for tickets to help you, then they can send you an email on their cheapest finds.

Here are a couple additional sites about finding cheap tickets (NOTE that the first site is awesome!  There are five sections that help you find good cheap tickets, check them all out but especially look at the section on 'learn the tricks'):

  3. Contact a travel agent for help. Ask them to keep an eye out for cheap fares.
