  1. There is only one company: the SNCF. They cover the whole country. They are not cheap, except if you hold a special card, like seniors or 12-25ans, then you can get reductions.


  2. There is essentiailly one train company in France, to wit, the SNCF (Société Nationale des Chemins de fer Français) formed by the nationalization of the rail system by the Socialists in the 1930's.

    In 1997 the tracks and other rail infrastructure were given to  to a separate government establishment, the Réseau Ferré de France, with the alledged intent of allowing competition by private entities. As a practical matter this has not developed.

  3. There is only one: the SNCF (public)
