The wife and I are going to Cancun in a couple of weeks and we're staying at a hotel that last year charged us about $15 for a couple of phone calls back home. What are some other options so we can check on the kids and I won't have to choke on the price?

  1. Company is in Cancun call 1-888-862-3806 for help booking rooms, information and all.

They will give you ideas for fun too like:

Definately the Swim with Dolphins, this is fantastic especially if you go to Dolphin Discovery on Isla Mujeres, as you have a 40 minute boat ride there and back with open bar and entertainment.

The Captain Hook Pirate ships are another fun thing to try.

A Jungle tour through the mangroves, with snorkelling over the Coral reefs.

If you´re into diving, then Call Ben Mooney at http://www.mayanaquadive.com as he knows some great dive sites.

Xcaret is a wonderful day out, as you get to enjoy an ecopark, with dolphins, turtles ect and then get to watch probably the best show in the whole of Mexico at night.

A catamaran trip with http://www.cancuncatamarans.com is a must, a day sailing and snorkeling, with buffet lunch on Isla Mujeres, open bar, a shopping trip and the chance to have your picture taken holding a live shark.

At night, try the Cancun Party Hopper, there are now 2 different versions going to different bars, and they are great fun.

    Hope this helps.

  2. Buying a calling card is a great idea, but not all of them will work inside of Mexico. I have come into the situation a few times where the calling card I bought here in the United States would not work in Mexico. If you would like you can find the nearest Caseta in Mexico, basically that is a public telephone store. Find the one that the locals use. They are usually pretty cheap and only charge the time you actually talk. Calling cards charge connection fees and taxes. Oh and I promise their are plenty of Caseta available.

  3. YES...A Bonita Senorita card will work OK...

  4. Whenever I travel to Mexico I first purchase a phone card at a convenience store and then use it to call back to the United States from the land line of wheverever I am staying. I believe that if you place a call by going through the services of a phone card company--espeically one that specializes in international calling--you will probably get a much better rate than what you have been getting by simply dialing direct to the U.S. through the standard service. Simply look for the nearest Oxxo, Seven-Eleven, or other such convenience store and ask for a telephone card, and especially inquire as to whether they have any special cards for international calls.

  5. You asked your question at just the right time -

    Check Mexitel Cellular (http://www.mexitel.net).

Phone gets sent to you in the US (so you can use them to call your transfer while waiting for your luggage instead of looking for your name on a plaque like a lost puppy dog!) and they cost $1 PER CALL (can be up to 20 minutes long before you owe them another $1), and NOT $1 PER MINUTE to call the US. Calls to other cell phones in MX cost 50 cents, incoming calls are free. They include a pre-addressed, pre-paid return shipping box with the phone to return is an absolute breeze. We just got back and will be doing this every time from now on. Super-highly recommended.
