cheapest and most flexible way is to buy a direct (or semi-direct) flight to London.  And then EasyJet it anywhere around Europe.  EasyJet is SOOOO cheap, it's almost unbelievable. London-Rome one way can be as low as 10 Euros (!!) seriously.  and you can just do all of the transactions over the web when you get to London.

Check out sidestep.com. It allows you to search for the cheapest flight on many other sites simultaneously (sites like Travelocity, Expedia, Orbitz, the airline sites, etc.). It does not cover Hotwire, so search that one separately. Good luck!
