I am traveling on a Wednesday, landing at London City Airport at 1:05pm. My next flight leaves from Heathrow Terminal 5 at 4:45pm. Is the Heathrow Express from Paddington Station a good idea? Is there a less expenisve way? Thank you!

  1. Cheapest would be:

    =====================

    (1) Docklands light rail from London City Airport to Canning Town (6 min)

    (2) Jubilee Line from Canning Town to Green Park (21 min)

    (3) Piccadilly Line from Green Park to London Heathrow (50 min)

Transport For London (TFL) estimates 89 minutes for entire trip (allowing an average of 6 minutes for each interchange).

In addition you have to walk from your LCY gate to the DLR station, and from the Heathrow Terminal #5 to your gate. By that estimate you should be there two hours before your flight.

    ------------------

Piccadilly Line has a lot of room on the floor because they know that people are carrying luggage. The other two lines are relatively new, so they shouldn't be bad.

    ------------------

The cheapest is nearly the fastest as well. TFL estimates that if you use the Heathrow Express you could save 6 minutes (because you need to make an extra underground interchange). It is very expensive to save those 6 minutes.

    -----------------

Construction warning! Don't take the DLR to Bank or Aldgate East.

    -----------------

There are no buses that I can see. According to driving estimates it is 25 miles and 61 minutes (subject to traffic). The ring roads are too far away so the taxi basically has to drive through the city. I'm not sure how much time you will save if you are running late.

    -----------------

Get an Oyster card online before you go. That will save you some critical time on the ground.

  2. What time does check-in close for your 4.45pm flight?  You may find that it closes 2 hours before take-off, ie at 2.45pm.  Which is cutting things very fine, especially if your arrival at London City is delayed, or it takes a while to clear customs and get your luggage.  You will need to look into this very carefully before deciding whether this transfer is actually possible.

  3. Hi- I work in Heathrow.

I would take the tube from City aiport to Paddington and the from there you can either take the Heathrow Express or the Heathrow Connect.

The Express is faster and more expensive (takes 15 mins and costs about 15 quid) than the Connect (takes about 30 mins and costs about 7 quid) .

ALTHOUGH, the Express goes straight to Terminal 5.  If you take the Connect you have to get off at the first stop at Heathrow and wait for a free transfer to Terminal 5.
