What is the cheapest way to get from Rheindhalen Germany to Calais in France?

My son is being posted to Rheindahlen and my husband was going to go in the car with him out there, but we would like to know the cheapest way for my husband to get back. And which buses or trains would he need to get?

Bear in mind, if you take slow "regional" trains, tickets tend to be cheaper, and there are discounts available for those who book far ahead.

I would go to the nearest Trainstation (Deutsche Bundesbahn) and get info, the train will be the cheapest way, dont forget to ask for military discount, if it applys.Many people dont know that, but the Deutsche Bundesbahn does give discounts for the military.
