I would drive, that would be the cheapest way, if you have your own car.  Even renting a car in Germany isn't that expensive, as long as you shop around for a good deal.

Try www.mitfahrgelegenheit.de it's a rideshare board. You'll probably pay somewhere between 30-40 euros each way. Just make sure you have a backup plan in case the person doesn't show up. I usually meet at the train station.

cheapest way in germany is by train nothing else is cheaper than that except hitch-hiking which might be illegal. check your local bahnhoff schedule

The ICE trains are the fastest and run on the best track.

Arrive Mannheim  at 8:26, track 3  

Depart Mannheim 8:31 track  2  on  ICE 976

Arrive Berlin Hauptbahnhof  at 1:24pm  

The total trip is 5 hrs, 33 minutes and runs daily.  You cannot drive it that fast.

You should make reservations.  With the World Cup this month, trains will be crowded.  It only costs 1.60 euro to reserve a seat and you can request smoking/non-smoking.  

When you get to the platform, look for a picture of the train that shows where your car will stop.  Then stand at that part of the track.
