What is the cheapest way to get to Europe, Amsterdam in particular, in August?

Ok i wish to travel to Amsterdam in August and I am pretty flexible on the dates. Most of the travel sites that search multiple airlines have the lowest price around 1000$. Seeing as I would be flying out of a Major international airport Miami and into another major Hub i feel like there may be a cheaper way. Can I still go to the airport without a ticket and say I am gonna be here all day and if something opens up I will pay x*x amount for 1 way ticket? Courier ? Anyone know a cheap carrier or cheaper way to travel there? I am very flexiable.

Martinair shows some late Aug. r/t for $974 total.  These are nonstop flights to/from Amsterdam.
