Question:

What is the cheapest way to get to Guam?

I would be leaving from New York City.

My travel options are open... plane, boat, whatever.

I've looked in to air courier travel, although it's inexpensive, I don't know much about it.

If any one has any valuable tips about budget travel, or knowledge of actually getting to Guam on a student income... I'd be so grateful.

  1. you're gonna have to fly there...and its kinda expensive...over $1000

  2. Continental via Hawaii

    Northwest Airlines via Tokyo

    Philippine Airlines via Manila

  3. The only way I know of is to fly on a plane. There are container ships that go to Guam but I don't know if they can take passengers. Try to buy your ticket as early as possible that might make it cheaper? For container ships you could look at the shipping schedule for ships leaving the East coast. Check this out. Try taking a train to the west coast. Then hop a flight out of LA or Seattle to Guam. That might be cheaper? Guam is beautiful. I lived there for Nine years. The airline ticket cost could trap people there.  Hafa day

  4. Sounds funny, but in reality, the cheapest way is to fly. Even if you had the time and flexibility to get on a boat or courier or whatever, you'd be paying through your time wasted and the headache involved. There are a ton of immigration and customs items to consider when traveling by boat, as compared to it being so easy when done through an airport.

-From New York, use budget traveling to get to California. Southwest Airlines, JetBlue and whoever else can be cheap for one way tix. With today's gas prices, again flying is the best and cheapest way, unless you share a car with like 5 people to split the gas. Consider the amount and cost of gas, food, car wear, and other expenses before traveling across country for 3 days of your life. It can be over with a single airplane ride and be done.

-Once you're in California, you need to take a flight either to Japan or Hawaii to get to Guam. There are options to stopover in the Philippines as well. Usually, the stopover in Hawaii is shorter (like 3 hrs or so) and will be more expensive. Going through Japan is generally a couple bucks cheaper, but will be like 11 hours (!) stopover, but it goes quickly and there are many things you can do while there.

Call Northwest, ANA, Korean Air or Continental Airlines to schedule your flight from there. There are a ton of ways to get to either Japan or Hawaii from California, some will be cheaper than others. But going to Guam from there will be a little limited on airlines, and subject to their schedule.

-All in all, flying will be pricey going anywhere. Go to Northwest's or Continental's website and play around with scheduling a flight to get exact fares and info, THEN CALL THEM! Don't buy it online, cuz you'll just get the going rate. Calling them sometimes gets a better rate, but you HAVE TO ASK NICE. Be especially courteous and respectful to anyone in customer service and they'll probably help you out. Don't kiss their butt too much, but explain to them your situation. Remember these are people and they can be total jerks or be an angel in your time of need.

  5. get paid to travel there.

Or you could walk over the land part and swim the wet part.
