Question:

What is the cheapest way to move across the country?

Now that gasoline is so expensive, I can just imagine that moving my stuff with a rental truck or with a moving company on the road is terribly expensive. Does anyone think moving my stuff by railroad may be better? Who offers this? If not, then do you have any suggestions?

  1. I would sell all the stuff i don't need and just keep the mementos. I would buy new when I got the where I was going. If you do that an ordinary freight company could move your packaged belongings.

  2. if your stuff is worth less than it would cost you to move, then sell it & buy new stuff-

only keep the things you absolutely cant part with & pack your car w/ it & drive-

  3. rent an RV.

  4. i would definatly use a train.

  5. leave ur stuff behind n hitchhike

  6. Telekinesis

  7. Car with a uhaul hitch is the cheapest. Even with gas prices, it's better to do it yourself. If you hire someone or rent a truck it'll cost way more because big trucks drink more gas. I moved from The Bay Area CA to New York and it only took 5 days. It was cost effective because I went with other people and if you factor in airline plus moving costs, it would be a lot higher than having a car with a hitch.

You also have to remember that a lot of that stuff is replaceable. You have to do inventory by weight and see what you really need and if you can replace it or not. For instance books, certain furniture items etc. You should move with just the bare essentials. Stuff you can't live without or replace. Like you personal items, data pr stuff you'll need right away like clothing, pots/pans/dishes etc.

  10. railroad yes but ones that carry people and luggage don't go across the US.

    i say fly

  11. walk

  12. If it were me moving, I would sell everything that I can and buy all over again.  If you really have to take your stuff try using pods.

The first time we moved from the east coast to California we used pods.  They will drop it off at your house where ever you are and then they will drop your stuff off to where ever you move to.

Though it is not always thought about these days look into using the railroad. There was a time before the huge car companies destroyed many railroads that this form of transportation of goods was a good choice. It might still be for you. At least check it out.
