We are travelling on a backpackers allowance.

Would like to do part of the inca trail to Machu Picchu, Lake Tatiicha, amazon. (excuse spelling of sights).

Want it to be safe options with a good track record.

  1. forget the inca trail. way too many people and you have to reserve a ticket almost a year in advance to ensure a spot. there is another trail called the salcantay that is absalutely stunning! we could not get on the inca trail but trekked part of the salcantay trail. btw this trail ends up at machu picchu just like the inca.                                                                  theres no machu picchu there, but if you want to go somewhere with half the crowds (virtually no tourists), for half the price, and with twice the wow! factor, Bolivia is the place to go. that place feels like another planet sometimes!

  2. When you get to Cusco, Peru  seek out travel companies that have different options of getting to Machu Picchu. when we did it, we biked one day and hiked for three.  The company provided lodging and food along the way.  Lovely way to travel there!  Just a warning the ticket to MP is expensive no matter what, but worth every penny!  Just remember to shop around, don't always go for the cheapest because you will get what you pay for.

Go through Bolivia for cheapest amazon trips.  Well worth it!

Be sure to stop at the Uros Islands on Lake Titacaca.

I would recommend buying a Let's Go travel guide, and plan the trip yourself (this guide focuses on what is fun and cheap, as well as some higher $ stuff).  Plan it as you go, there are an abudance of toursit companies, and they will be very accomidating.  AND if it didn't get ruined by the quake this summer go to Ica (desert oasis, and go sandboarding)
