What is the cheapest way to ship large items (bicycle, T.V., etc.) across the country?

I'm going to college and I have some large items that I'd like to bring with me, notably my bike, a TV, a guitar, a keyboard piano, and possibly some moderately sized furniture. I live in California and I'll be moving to Ohio next fall. I've heard of renting a crate and getting it shipped, in addition to a few other reasonable ideas, though I haven't been able to find a company through which to do this, or any other opinions on the matter. If anyone has done this or has any ideas, I would greatly appreciate it.
