  1. Ryanair, EasyJet, AirEuropa, etc.  No frills airlines are usually cheaper than trains if, for example, you're willing to fly out of London Stanted instead of Heathrow or into Malaga instead of Madrid.  Sometimes the off-beaten path is the best anyway.

  2. euro-pass, backpacking, youth-hostels, and staying at strangers houses.

  3. by train definately. You see all the sights and still get a good rate. You can take the ubon to travel in the city you visit. It's the german version of the New york subway. but much cleaner.

  4. If you don't have a preferred starting point, just pick the cheapest overseas fare to a city. Also check for example Singapore Airlines that makes a stop-over in Germany to Singapore originating from NYC or NEW AIRPORT. One of the best airlines with good prices.

The infrastructure by bus (eurolines) or train (seveveral passes)is excellent and cheap. You may also check if some european airlines offer air passes.

    The low-cost airlines:

pro: are also a good option. Watch for out for the many add-ons that may make your ticket not so low cost. Only in Germany the price reflects all the costs. Top 5 low cost carriers are Ryanair, Easyjet, Air Berlin, German Wings, Transavia. If you travel on wednesdays you may be able to score some good fares.

con: you may have to travel via their hubs i.e. from barcelona to rome will be difficult.

Travelling by rental car is also a good option try sixt rental car. They have good deals, especially for students and fair one -way drop-off charges if you need to use this. Make sure you cover cross country travelling policies, traffic laws and get a international drivers licence at AAA.

  5. The key is to do some research!

My kids and I traveled Europe for almost two months using planes, trains, and automobiles (and buses and our feet).  My dad lived in Landstuhl, Germany so we home based there.

While the Europass was usually the most cost efficient, we found plane tickets from Hahn, Germany to England on RyanAire for what amounted to $7.00 U.S. dollars.

We also rented a small van for a weekend trip from Germany to Amsterdam.  It was much cheaper than the 6 train or plane tickets that we would have had to buy.

Also, taking night trains (sleeping cars), like we did from Germany to Rome, saved on hotel costs.

  6. by airplane.

  7. backpacking
