If money is an issue, visit "Playa del Carmen" it is only 30 minutes from Can Cun and it is 50% cheaper.

Do not forget that in the same  town there are scales of services, in Can cun you can find from Upper luxurious to Medium income hotels.  while in playa del carmen you can find lower ranges .

The cheapest is bus, there is a bus station there, you have to go to Cancun-Downtown, then you take the bus that will take you to the place you want.

If you grab a cab, think of cab prices in New York, they are expensive (about 30 to 60 dollars).

good luck, get a map and don´t bring many suitcases to carry.

Remember Cancun is a tourist town (they live only from tourism, no other income) so everything costs.

But also there are people who live there that can´t pay the tourist prices for comfort (like cabs or 5 star hotels), so you have to move, sweat and walk a lot.

By the way, if you are going to Cancun and staying at a hostel, why don´t you go to Playa del Carmen (about 30 minutes to the south) or Tulum (about an hour), cheaper and way more backpack mode.
