  1. When Ethane C2H6 loses 1 Hydrogen during a reaction with, say Chlorine, we have 'Ethyl Chloride' (C2H5Cl). The C2H5 is the 'Ethyl' Group.

Any Alkane that loses a Hydrogen becomes the 'Alkyl' group.

Pentane C5H12 becomes C5H11 as the 'Pentyl' (or once called 'Amyl') group.

(The 'Amyl' group is still used in some instances as in Amyl acetate, Amylamine and Amyl alcohol).

  2. ethyl group

  3. This is called the "ethyl group", and derived from methane (C2H6).

  4. C2H5 is an "ethyl group"

    ***********************

C2H6 is ethane.  If you remove an H, and attach the C2H5- to something else, we remove the "ane" and attach a "yl" and call it an "ethyl group"

    similarly

    CH3 is methyl

    C3H7 is propyl

    C4H9 is butyl

    etc

  5. Ethyl
