I'm betting it's something obvious...it's just review in my textbook, though, so it doesn't give an answer :(

  1. In how much detail?

I guess the short answer is respiration.

  2. No, it is not mitosis. Mitosis is the division of one cell into two daughter cells.

I'm guessing the phrase you are looking for is "oxidative phosphorylation".  Also called respiration.

(Mitochondria do lots of other stuff though too, but that is the primary function)

  3. mitochondria is the "powerhouse" of every living cell in our body.  It is where energy is produced.  In addition to supplying energy, mitochondria are involved in cell differentiation, cell death, cell growth and the cell cycle.

  4. yeah, in how much detail? respiration takes place, but what happens in the matrix of mitochondria is Krebs cycle and within the inner membrane (the cristae of mitochondria) is the Electron Transport Chain.

    it's interesting though very complex.

In Krebs cycle, hydrogen ions are released as much as possible from the substrates of respiration (glucose in different forms). in ETC, the hydrogen ions are potential in creating a flow of energy for which ATP is synthesised.
