    At one time Grizzles were found over much of the area that is now the United States, especially in the west. The state animal of California is the Grizzly Bear because at one time it was found throughout the state except for the Death Valley and it is on the state flag. The Lewis and Clark expedition encountered Grizzles along the Mississippi River during their survey of the Louisiana Purchase Territory.
