What is the closest islands to ATHENS that are nice to live on?

The closest islands to Athens are Egina , Angistri, Poros, Spetses, Hydra on the Saronic gulf and which are easily accessible by Hydrofoil boats. The farthest only a few hours away.

On the Aegean side Syros is the closest and most easily reached one of all the rest islands in the Cyclades cluster.

Since you are interested in living and not just vocation I would say definitely Tinos island. Even though I had no connection to the island when i first traveled there it's now my permanent vocation destination and plan to move there someday. Beautiful scenery, doesn't get deserted during winters unlike many other islands, and it's 3 hours away with a high speed ship from Piraeus harbor! There are other islands a bit closer but in my opinion none qualifies for permanent stay except maybe Syros, capital island of the Cyclades(not so beautiful though).

Spetses,Poros,Syros,Andros or Mykonos.....Andros is veeeeeeery beautiful while Mykonos is famous for its beaches and its nightlife!

Many people live on Salamina - which is VERY close to Pireaus and easy to commute daily if you need to work in Athens - however if you are foreign you and have children you may want to look into schools / hospitals /work availability etc before deciding on an island.
