If you don't mind only slot machines,  you can go to Yonkers Raceway.  Its only a few minutes from manhattan right off of the N.Y. state throughway.    Google them at empirecity.com for exact directions.  Its is huge there and I always have lots of fun there.

It's probably a toss-up between Atlantic City NJ and Mohegan Sun in Connecticut.

Atlantic City has several casinos to choose from and is the closest area to you that has casinos.  The Borgata is arguably the best of them but is not located on the boardwalk.  The second best in my opinion would be the Trump Taj Mahal.  If you're looking to play blackjack, the best casinos for that are the Borgata and Trump Plaza (6 decks, stand on soft 17's, doa, das, split up to 4 hands).   For poker, the Taj Mahal, Borgata and Tropicana are good places to go to.  For slots, the Borgata is your best bet.
