They're not really macros, they're part of the operating system.  All operating systems have their own keyboard shortcuts.  For example, in nearly all operating systems using a command line interface (Windows and MS Dos included) ctrl-c is the shortcut to cancel or stop the current process.  Windows is proprietary, and they keep their source code secret, but Linux is open source and you could find the code they use for their keyboard shortcuts, provided you recognize the code, or the programmer put comments into the source code.
