We're thinking of moving from London to Swanage with jobs in Bournemouth. Has anyone got experience of commuting from Swanage to Bournemouth (via ferry)...what's it like, how long is it, how expensive and how cumbersome?

THANKS!!!

  1. It is a slow drive, unfortunately.

On a good day, you can do it in about 45 minutes.  On a bad day, the 2 hours mentioned above is very, very likely.

Don't even consider the Sandbanks ferry during the summer months.  We never use the ferry when going to Swanage.  Waiting times of over an hour are quite common...

  2. this link might be of some help

  3. Its a beautiful drive.

I don't do it myself but a friend does. Its about 45 mins if you leave early enough (7am).  My friend goes to Bmth via ferry but goes home round the bay via Wareham to avoid traffic at sandbanks.

Its ok but in the summer those ferry ques will be a nightmare, its just as quick to drive all the way around.  Like anywhere nowadays, rush hour is a nightmare, but if you leave early enough its fine.

I think the ferry is £2.10 off season for cars, don't quote me on that, I tend to kayak across!.

Edit: I should add, summer season, on a bad day rush hour 2 hrs isn't unheard of. Swanage is beautiful though, go for it.

  4. Waiting for the ferry in the summer can take a while or you drive via Wareham.
