  1. Magnifying power is how much "bigger" a lens makes something appear.  Resolving power is the ability of the lens to separate two closely spaced objects, forming two distinct images rather than one.   Here's an example of resolving power.  Take two copper pennies and stick them to a light colored wall with about 1/16 inch separation between them.  Stand about 2 feet back and look at them.  You will see each penny.  Now move back several feet at a time and look again.  Eventually you will reach a point where you can't see the individual pennies even though you can see a single dark spot where the pennies are.  At this point you have reached the limit of the resolving power of your eyes.
