What is the computer north bridge?

This may seem like a stupid question.

I beleive it is directly linked with CPU/RAM FSB etc.?

Please do not try to explain in a non technical way as I am fairly up with how a computer functions.

  1. the Northbridge is the chip or chips that connect a CPU to memory, the PCI bus, Level 2 cache and AGP activities
