  1. There is no "immediate" test that can be done.  To insure accuracey, the doctors can only test 90 days after the incident.  Otherwise, the results wont be very reliable.

However, if the person goes to the doctor immediately after exposure to the virus, the doctor can prescribe anti-retroviral drugs to the patient that can reduce the risk of HIV infection.

  2. tests to detect the presence of HIV are:

    1. HIV_1 Anitgen

    2.HIV-1 DNA Qualitative by PCR

    3. HIV-1 RNA Quantitative by Branch DNA (viral load)

    4. HIV-1 RNA Quantitative by PCR (viral load)

what is generally done is a HIV antibody. IgG/IgM.. if positive.. the confirmative is a Western Blot.

  3. The Western Blot test is the confirmative test.  Although the ELISA test is usually done first because it is less expensive but it can give a false positive.  So when ELISA gives a positive, the western blot test will be ordered to confirm the ELISA results.
