English has been the main language of international affairs since, unfortunately, the British empire. After the British Empire's demise, the United States came into play as a major power. Due to the unfortunate dominance the US currently has over the world, in the recent past at least, global affairs have generally been held in English, the main language of the US. Global economics and politics are also often discussed in French, German, Japanese and increasingly arabic. Arabic is becoming a very substantial international language along with Chinese. Very good question, it always bothered me too.
