Question:

What is the correct call?

Runner A on first with 1 out. Batter hits a fly ball down the first baseline. Runner A returns to first base. While Runner A is standing on top of the base with both feet, the fly ball comes down and hits Runner A on the head and subsequently ricochets into foul territory where it comes to rest. What is the call?

Note: Runner A does not act in a way that would be construed as intentionally hindering the fielder from fielding the ball.

  1. Runner A is out and batter is awarded first base (and credited with a single).

Even though Runner A is on the base he is still liable to be called out if he's hit with a batted ball in fair territory.

Hey a**s Man: Before you call somebody an idiot you should know what you're talking about because if you're wrong then you look like an even bigger IDIOT.

  2. the ball hit the runner in fair territory ..hes standing on base so hes not out and its a fair ball...................sorry chris the runner is on the base and is considered  safe

  3. You posted the correct answer before I could get in, but I know what you're talking. Runner out, dead ball, batter gets single.

As an official scorer, I've heard the same type of things, just not as often as an umpire.

EDIT: You need to have a force at third or home for the Infield Fly rule, I believe, Chip.

Good job, utter. Tell those idiots.

  4. Utter's got it right, though from the description -- a fly and not a pop-up -- it is likely the umpire would issue the "infield fly, if fair" call, in which case the batter is out (automatically) and runner A retains first base (and, as noted, a headache).

Edit: Yeah, fair enough. The IFR trips up even me.

  5. The runner is still out if he is hit by a batted ball while he is on a base. Providing it has not passed or been touched by a fielder. The only exception is on an Infield Fly play. If a runner is touching his base when hit by an Infield Fly, he is not out, although the batter is out. If the runner is hit by an Infield Fly when he is not touching his base, both runner and batter are out.

  6. Its a foul ball it never hit ground  in play so its foul

  7. No matter if the runner is on the base or not, he still is technically in the field of play (and in fair territory) therefore he is ruled out and depending on if the batter runs to first, he would be rewarded with a base hit...The reason I know this is because if the runner is in foul territory (example third base line, leading from third) he is not ruled out, but whenever a runner is hit by the ball in fair territory they are out, since the ball hit a player in fair territory then landed in foul territory it is a fair ball and the batter if he reaches first bases would be rewarded with a hit.  It does not matter if the runner is sitting on the base, he is still in fair territory as the base is fair territory.

Runner A out, with a headache, and batter may be safe or not, depending if he runs it out.

  8. Runner A gets a headache as the result.

  9. Utter chaos is an idiot, he wouldn't be called out. It would be a fair ball and both runner A and the batter would be able to advance.

  10. ok

  11. the ball hit the runner in fair territory so he`s standing on base so he`s not out and its a fair ball. The runner A would be forced to go to 2nd becuz the batter is going to 1st base.
