Several sites concerning the subject all agree on  about 28 inches .

At that distance, the lens of your eyes aren't compensating for near vision, so it is more restfull.

the ideal distance is at least 40 cm or 14 inch

but if not there is two condition:

if it is far than that , that will increase the ability of eye to increase it's power to configure the detail and make hard work and lead to be hyperobic eye.

but if it is near than that 40 may make your eye stretch with more ability of be myopic eye.
