What is the correct way to put silver ware in a dishwasher?

Do you put the cutting part/knife, eating part of a spoon or fork, facing up or down.

knife blades and any other sharp object down.....forks, spoons, spatulas up....if it is a long knife(carving) or long handled spoon then i lay it down in an open plate slot or on the top rack with glasses

All your utensils should be pointing north. Alot of people believe that you will get poked by sharp edges - this is true, but they will not be cleaned properly if pointing south.  Utensils that are too big, place in the cup rack laying on its side.
