  1. It depends on where you are going.  Avoid taxis at all cost, they are very expensive.  Trains I feel are inexpensive travelling from city to city.  For my husband and I to take a Eurostar (it's quicker than a traditional train but a little more expensive) from Florence to Rome it was 66Euro.  Busses and subways are essentially free.  After a while we stopped paying for them because nobody else was.

  2. Passengers Trains (Ferrovie dello Stato, Trenitalia) have a lot of offerts, depending the type of train and the distance. You can see the fares at the Site www.trenitalia.it

For example, if you buy an "Eurostar" Train ticket from Milano to Roma ("Eurostar" is the best train, only 4.30 hours), you will pay 71 Euros for First Class, or 51 Euros for Second Class.

If you want a cheaper train, you can take an "Intercity" from Milano to Roma, but the travel time will raise to 5:53 hours and it's a bit less comfortable.

Bus, Trams and Subways (Underground) intended as public transport inside city, may cost on average 0.80 Euros to 1.20 Euros per single run, or per 45 minutes... the fares depending the City.

Long Range Bus, intended connecting city to city may cost an average 1 Euro every 10 Km (6 U.S. Miles).

Taxi are very expensive in Italy, you will pay a minimum of 7 Euros, up to 20 Euros, from a point to another of the same city. Using a taxi to travel from a city to another city is a "bad" choice: you may pay even 80-100 Euros for  50 Km (31 U.S. Miles) of distance. Notice that the taxi driver could attempt to raise the fare, if he's not honest...

  3. Of course, it all depends on where you are going.

For train fares, check out www.trenitalia.com

Buses in major cities cost between 1 to 2 euro for a ride or in some cities for 60 minutes (you can ride as many buses as you want in that hour). Between cities, again it depends on where you go. There are difference bus companies all over Italy so it is hard to give you a link to look up prices. If you can be more specific, I can give you better instructions.

As for taxis, they are expensive in Italy. And, unfortunately, sometimes they are dishonest as well. First of all, be sure that they turn the meter on to start your journey and that you only pay what the meter says. They must use the meter by law and if they refuse, you should refuse to take the journey. Also, inside the taxi should be a price list -- in several languages, usually Italian, English, French and German -- that you can compare what you are being charged for. There can be all kinds of extra charges too like a charge for bags, a starting fee, supplements on holidays and off-hours (essentially the middle of the night).
