  1. The cost of playing tennis is like the cost of owning a house.  It will take as much money as you want to throw at it (can be a money drain).  Generally, the more money you throw at it, the better it can be.  There are ways to make it cheaper, but if you're serious about tennis, it'll cost you.  For me, I've been playing for 3 years now.  I've taken about 7 private lessons at $40 each.  I've taken two community college classes (45 dollars each).  I bought my own stringer for $630.  I currently own 5 racquets (Avg 120/each).  I go through about 30-45 cans of tennis balls in a year ($2/can), and play about 5 times a week.   I restring my 2 main racquets every 2-3 months, with a hybrid of natural gut and a polyester string (cost=$20 for string).   Being a member of USTA will cost you $45 a year.  Weekend tournaments cost about $40.  Online singles leagues cost about $35/ season (I'm on my 3rd season). As you can probably tell, I am a tennis nut.  I love this sport.  Good luck with your game!

  2. Please....Elite?

Public courts are free and prevalent.

You can buy a starter racquet for less than $25 some places. AND there are plenty of events that give them away (especially to students).

A can of balls costs $2-3 and could last a beginner a full summer; if not gotten wet.

City tennis lessons usually cost less than $10 a lesson.

    Elitist?  Please....

Find any nearby racquet club or your Park and Rec office.  The USTA website will hook you up with players for FREE!!

    Just get in the game!

  3. Public Courts/Low-dollarCoach

    $21.42 per day

    $150 per week

    $600 per month

    and

    $7,200 per year

    that's US Dollars

    Private Club/Elite Coach(es)

    4x7200 = $28,800.00

  4. Its a sport for the elite rich people...

Club dues on top of lessons... its high up there in terms of cost just to play and be good/ accepted.

But if youre just messing around, buying a racket and finding an open/public court is relatively cheap

  5. I'm puzzled by some of the answers above.  Playing tennis does not have to cost a lot of money.  Like some other sports, it depends on your intentions.  You can learn the basics from a video you pick up at the library for nothing or you can learn from a private coach for hundreds.  If you need a lot of hands on, in person help,  get a coach.  If you're a quick study and can self teach get the video and watch pro matches.  Go a tennis specialty store for pro help on choosing equipment.

  6. I bought a £60 pound racket, (There is cheaper though)

    About £2.50 for some balls,

And £1 an hour for the court.
