  1. Family-run places with "Fremdenzimmer"/"Zimmer frei" (rooms to let to tourists) start from 30 EUR in rural areas off the beaten track and out of season and go up to 120 EUR.  A price of 50-60 EUR is normal.

The cheapest places are usually hostels, though.

If you are going to Germany and want cheap B&B, the best way is to contact the local tourist information bureau (the "i"). They usually have a list with rooms available, which you can often book in advance through them. You can find the adresses of the "tourist information" online through the cities' and regions' websites

  2. I'm not sure what you mean by B&B.

There are many forms of accommodation that offer B&B in Germany and it varies in price across the country, from small guest houses to larger hotels.

I've provided a link to a tool that helps you sort accommodation by location, price, star rating and also provides you with details of what's offered - you have to dig deep into the last minute results for this and mouse over the pricing to reveal the free inclusions.

  3. Germany doesn't really do the Bed & Breakfast thing.  The UK and some of the southern European countries do, but not Germany.  There are some hostles here, but I suggest staying in a gasthause in the smaller towns in you plan on traveling around a bit.  These will tend to be less expensive (by far) than anything you will find in a larger city.  You can book your rooms halb pension (breakfast only), voll pension (breakfast and dinner), or just the room with no meals.  Breakfast will normally be various breads, jams, deli meats, and cheeses.  Sometimes you may find a place that offers scrambled eggs and ham, but not very often.

Prices will also vary depending on where in Germany you will be traveling and during what season.

  4. Depends on your definition of a bed and breakfast.  I consider some gasthause to be a large Bed and Breakfast (House with 6 rooms, gasthause can run up to 15+ rooms).

If your definition of a B&B is a family run place with home like feel that offers breakfast, then there are a lot of places in Germany like that.  Also what do you call restaurants/pubs with a second floor of 4-8 bedrooms?  I consider those B&Bs as well.

If a B&B is a 4 bedroom "real" house where 2-3 of the bedrooms have been converted to allow visitors, then you won't see much of these in Germany.

They are cheaper than a hotel in the area, but prices vary according to location and whether you want your own bathroom.  If your room has a bathroom then it is 10-15% cheaper.  If it doesn't, it runs 20-40% cheaper.  In some parts of Germany (small towns) there are no hotels, these are your only choices.
