  1. that's a fun lifestyle!

you can live on a boat year round...it's the same cost as a home.

people still do that even in manhattan ( yes it's true)

and on long island as well.

so it doesn't have to be in some exotic place.

a true yacht..can cost in the millions of dollars.

a very small simple one starts at $150,000.

docking cost would depend upon where you live and what services are provided.

    fuel is expensive.

  2. The old saying is "If you have to ask, you can't afford it"

  3. Mine cost 426 million dollars. I admit its a cheap one. I pay $45,000.00 per week for my slip. Mine is Nuclear powered so fuel costs are not bad. I would not want to live on mine due to its very small. Its only 50 feet long but it has a 250 foot beam.

  4. This is a really reasonable question, and I'm surprised at all the c**p answers you've been given.

We use the equation of 5% of the cost of the yacht for general annual maintenance. On top of that you will from time to time (and sometimes all at the same time) require to put in capital expenditure. By that I mean fixing things that have broken down and are essential, rather than just maintaining wear and tear items. For example, annual maintenance may include things like: anitfoulling or varnishing. Capital Expenditure may include replacing a torn sail or getting in a mechanic to fix a major engine problem.

While docking and fuel are expensive, you will probably find that docking is cheaper than renting a house, diesel is cheaper than petrol in your car. So if you don't have those shoreside expenses, then living aboard can be very cheap. If you keep a yacht as a weekend toy, then its an expensive toy.

If you live on your own or just with a partner you can get away with a yacht as small as about 25'. But if you have a family and plan to travel the oceans you will need to be looking at 36' plus (42' avg) depending on what how much you are prepared to sacrifice.  You could find a yacht as cheap as US$20,000 but in this price bracket you need a trusted experienced person to check it out first. Try to buy a yacht under 25 years old, although I didn't follow that advice myself.

I really recommend the lifestyle. You will find it easiest to learn when you are young and have no children.   But be warned that when you do decide to start a family, being pregnant on board is no fun.  Moving back to shore can also be hard and trying to maintain a shore lifestyle while on board has its own set of challenges.

  5. 150k for a reasonable one. i know you saw room raiders on mtv, yeah that was sick... anyways docking? the ocean? about 400-600 a month? what gas? to go out everyday? $10 a day i'd say..
